A rejuvenated town centre site acting as a catalyst for change and growth.

The regeneration of Union Street in Aldershot will establish a distinctive, mixed-use town centre with high-quality offerings for retail, leisure, culture, employment and housing. The vision will unlock a currently inaccessible area to create a bustling and inspiring new quarter with key connections and a landscaped public realm.

The new public realm will create two interlinking yards that unite Union Street, High Street and Short Street. The yards will be pedestrianised and surrounded by a mix of uses including a café, retail space and maker units which aim to create a vibrant and active street scene for the local community.

The architecture respects Aldershot’s unique character with inspiration drawn from celebrated elements of the town’s heritage and history. Each detail is derived from its setting – from the varying plot widths, to the stepped roofscape and bespoke shopfronts, all of which combine to ensure the scheme is firmly rooted within Aldershot.

Project Delivery

– 100 new residential units and 128 student studios for the nearby University for the Creative Arts (UCA).

– Over 18,000 sq ft of flexible non-residential space for retail and leisure.

– Maker Units will connect the new square with Short Street and will become an animated space with a more flexible approach to commercial use.

– Union Yard and the square will become the focal point of the scheme and will be surrounded by non-residential uses on all sides.

– A palette of materials has been carefully curated to reflect the variety of colours and patterns found around Aldershot. These have been selected to bring variety and joy, with dashes of colour and varying, complementary tones.

– The brickwork has been chosen to create a timeless look, with a ‘special’ blue glazed/engineering brick in specifically chosen locations to bring emphasis to key areas.

– The junction between the residential flats and student accommodation is treated architecturally as tenure blind, to form a continuous flow of consistent built frontages.
